Knoxville Sage Newsletter #38

This week in magick!

Greetings, Magickal Souls!

I’ll admit — this week I don’t have any big revelations to share. But maybe that’s okay. Sometimes the magick is just in showing up, being present, and finding joy in the small things. So, here’s me showing up — and sharing about Mabon, and the latest events for our community.

Planning a trip should feel exciting, not overwhelming. As a certified Virgin Voyages First Mate and Viking Gold travel advisor, I help you cut through the noise, find the best value, and unlock perks you won’t see booking on your own. I can book whatever adventure you are looking for and my services don’t cost extra — but they can save you time, stress, and even money. Think of me as your detail-oriented partner in planning a getaway.

Sage Advice

Mabon is next week. Before the next newsletter, so I figured we’d share it today. Because it is better early than late, right?! Mabon, the Autumn Equinox, marks the balance of light and dark and the shift from summer to fall. It’s a time to honor the harvest, express gratitude, and seek balance within ourselves and with nature.

This season invites us to slow down, reflect, and celebrate abundance. You might:

  • Take a walk in the woods to enjoy the colors of autumn.

  • Gather leaves, pine cones, or acorns for seasonal décor or your altar.

  • Join a harvest festival or prepare a meal with apples, squash, or root vegetables.

  • Create a gratitude altar or keep a journal to honor the blessings in your life.

Mabon Symbols

1. Cornucopia (Horn of Plenty): The cornucopia is a symbol of abundance and plenty.
2. Autumn Leaves: The changing colors of autumn leaves, particularly shades of red, orange, and gold, symbolize the beauty and natural transformation of the season.
3. Apples: representing the harvest and the orchard's abundance. They can be used in rituals, decorations, or as offerings.
4. Grapes: particularly in the form of wine, are symbolic of the harvest and the celebration of abundance. They are associated with revelry and gratitude.
5. Wheat and Barley: representing the grains harvested during this season, they symbolize sustenance and the fruits of labor. These can be used in decorations, rituals, or as offerings.
6. Pomegranates: symbolic of fertility, abundance, and the cycle of life, making them a meaningful addition to Mabon celebrations.
7. Sunflowers: associated with the Sun and represent vitality, strength, and the bounty of the harvest.
8. Scales or Balancing Symbology: used to represent the equilibrium between light and dark.
9. Harvest Tools: such as sickles, scythes, and baskets are symbols of the harvest and the hard work involved in reaping the rewards of the season.
10. Candles in Autumn Colors: in warm autumn colors like orange, red, and yellow symbolizes the warmth of the season and the transitioning of light into darkness.
11. Moon and Sun Symbols:  Representing the balance between light and dark.
12. Feathers: particularly those from birds associated with the season like crows or owls, can symbolize the air element and the wisdom of nature.

Fall Equinox Rituals

1. Gratitude Ritual:
- Light a candle and create a sacred space for reflection.
- Take a moment to express gratitude for the blessings in your life. Reflect on the abundance you have received throughout the year.
- Write down or speak aloud the things you are thankful for, whether it's personal achievements, relationships, or the gifts of nature.
- Offer your gratitude to the Earth and any deities or spirits you connect with. You can do this through prayers, affirmations, or by making a small offering, such as a handful of grains or a piece of fruit.
- Conclude the ritual by extinguishing the candle and carrying the spirit of gratitude with you throughout the season.

2. Balance Ritual:
- Find a quiet and serene space.
- Place two candles, one representing light and the other representing darkness, on a table or altar.
- Light the candle symbolizing light and say a prayer or affirmation for balance and harmony.
- Light the candle symbolizing darkness and reflect on the importance of embracing both light and shadow aspects of life.
- Spend a few moments meditating on finding balance within yourself, your relationships, and your environment.
- When you feel ready, extinguish the candles, symbolizing the balance between light and dark.

A Bountiful Harvest Recipe:

Autumn Vegetable Soup:
Ingredients:
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 parsnips, diced
- 2 potatoes, diced
- 1 butternut squash, peeled and diced
- 4 cups vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions:
1. In a large pot, sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.
2. Add the carrots, parsnips, potatoes, and butternut squash. Stir well.
3. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the vegetables are tender.
4. Add the dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
5. Use an immersion blender or transfer a portion of the soup to a blender and blend until smooth.
6. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.

To put everything in balance is good, to put everything in harmony is better.

Victor Hugo

As eastern twilight begins to brighten on September 18, the waning crescent moon will be near the faint Beehive star cluster. And lower in the sky you’ll spot brilliant Venus and the star Regulus. On the following morning, September 19, the crescent moon will float next to Venus and Regulus. What’s more, a few lucky observers in parts of Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Africa will see the moon occult – or pass in front of – Venus at 12 UTC on September 19. If you look outside then and don’t see Venus … that might be because it’s behind the moon!
